Thank you for your interest in Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem. As New York State’s first charter school, we are proud to provide a free, high-quality public education in a nurturing and structured learning environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
We welcome families who are seeking a strong school community, dedicated educators, and a rich educational experience for their children.
Who Can Apply?
Any child who is eligible to attend a traditional public school in New York is also eligible to apply to a public charter school. Like all public schools, charter schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, disability, or any other protected category under the law.
How Are Students Admitted?
All charter schools are required to admit students through a random lottery when the number of applications exceeds the number of available seats.
The lottery for the 2026–2027 school year has already taken place. Families are still encouraged to apply, as students may be considered for available seats or placed on the waitlist if seats are not immediately available.

Expanding to Serve More Students
Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem is expanding to a K–8 model, beginning with the addition of 6th grade in September 2026. We are excited to continue growing and serving more students and families in our community.
