Dear Parents/Guardians:

We would like to welcome our new parents and thank our returning parents for choosing to remain at the Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem with your child. In the interest of a safe and orderly school environment we will continue to institute the Sisulu-Walker Uniform Dress Code Policy for the 2010 – 2011 school year. Parents, faculty and staff believe that a dress code minimizes distractions and maximizes learning, as well as fosters pride, dignity and a sense of belonging to one’s school. All students are expected to adhere to the dress code effective on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, the first day of classes. All students are to arrive by 7:45 am. The school day will begin at 8:00 am in the classroom.

Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem insists on high standards of dignity and decorum in the conduct and dress of all students. Students must be dressed appropriately and in conformity with good taste and citizenship. The dress code is in force throughout the academic day and for students who remain for any after school programs. Students are not permitted to change into street clothes prior to leaving at the end of the school day.

The Mandatory school uniform consists of the following:

Girls: Red polo shirt, short or long sleeved with the school emblem with khaki knee-length or longer skirts, pants or jumpers. Red turtleneck shirts or sweaters may be worn in the fall or winter. Tight or revealing clothes are not permitted.

Boys: Red polo shirt, short or long sleeved with the school emblem with short or long khaki pants that fit at their waist. Shirts will also need to be tucked in. A belt should be worn. Pants that are over-sized will not be permitted.

All students may wear white, red, brown or black socks. Also, students may wear simple neckwear, which must stay inside of their shirts. Girls may wear simple earrings. Girl’s stockings are limited to colors red, white, brown and black. Hair must be kept neat, out of the eyes with no unnatural hair colors or shaved designs.

Additionally, students are required to wear black or brown closed-toe shoes, sneakers (all black or all white) are only permitted during physical education. On the gym days students are permitted to wear a red polo shirt with school emblem and gray sweat pants.

Jeans, hooded sweatshirts, striped stockings, and t-shirts are not part of the dress code and therefore unacceptable. Sweaters worn in the building require the following colors: red, brown, white, and black. *Reminder* No hooded sweat shirts are permitted anywhere within the building.

We would like to thank you for your cooperation in instituting, maintaining and enforcing the dress code. The school’s uniform and gym uniform will be available to purchase on Thursday, September 2, 2010. Time: 9:00 – 6:30 pm. The cost of the short sleeve polo shirts were $15.25 ea and are now $10.00. Long sleeved shirts will be available for purchase at the end of September.

If there is any financial hardship in purchasing the school outfits, please contact Karlene Cowan the week of August 23, 2010.

Furthermore, The Parent and Student Handbook includes information about the School’s leadership team, general information about our curriculum and instruction and specific school policies and procedures that, if followed consistently, will contribute to the improvement of our school community and the continued success of our school. Additionally, The Student Management Agreement describes in detail, the specific policies and procedures that will be implemented to encourage appropriate conduct and ensure a safer learning environment.

We will be providing all students with marble (black and white) notebooks, pencils and loose leaf paper. Additionally, our teachers have created a Student Supply List (attached) in order for you to purchase the remaining materials.

At the Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem, we recognize that educating children requires a team effort and we look forward to working with you. By working together, we can realize our shared vision of excellence in public education and our mission to prepare our children for a lifetime of achievement, honor, service, and the global marketplace.

Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Dr. Dawn Cejas, Principal
